5 Easy Ways to Meet a Minimum Spend Requirement

Updated: Mar 3, 2024

You might be thinking, “How do people open so many credit cards and meet the minimum spend?” Well, here’s a list of things, I paid for that have helped me reach my minimum spend.

Taxes

With two incomes, we don’t usually deduct enough on each of our incomes to account for the increased combined income. This leaves us with a tax bill at the end of the year. One of the most satisfying things is swiping your card once and meeting your minimum spend in that one transaction. If I wouldn’t have a double income, I’d ask my employer to deduct as little as possible and the remaining money that would’ve been deducted, I’d put away in a separate account. That way when tax season comes around you can use a credit card to pay for your taxes and cover it with the cash you squirreled away throughout the year. Despite credit card processing fees, a good card like the Capital One Venture X , Chase Freedom unlimited combined with the Chase Saphire Reserve, makes it worthwhile to use a credit card, as the cash back alone is more than the fee.

Tuition

That’s a big bill that comes around all the time. My child’s school allows me to pay with a credit card, taking a chunk off the minimum spend requirement.

Insurance

Whether it’s car insurance, fire insurance or health insurance, those are large unavoidable bills that can help take a chunk off that minimum spend.

Car lease signup fees

Although not as often as the ones mentioned above, this is still a hefty fee that’s unavoidable. Paying it with a credit card helps us meet minimum spend requirements.

Daily living expenses

If you think your daily living expenses wouldn’t meet the minimum spend requirement, you need to take a hard look at your recent spending habits. The typical sign up bonus spend requirement is around $3-6k in 3 months. Most people I know spend that kind of money on daily living expenses.

Paying for other people’s things

Well not quite. I’d always get paid back. But having a few credit card wary friends and family members definitely helps;) If I know someone is about to pay cash/check for a large expense, I offer to pay for it and take the cash/check/zelle to my name.

Other

A few other ways you can meet a minimum spend requirement is by paying medical/dental bills, buying groups (advanced level travel hacking) and offering to pay for group purchases such as gifts and experiences.
